Swiss VAT rates
- 8.1 % standard rate: most goods and services, such as consulting, trades, electronics or meals in a restaurant.
- 2.6 % reduced rate: food and non-alcoholic drinks (not in restaurants), books and newspapers, medicines, tap water, plants and seeds.
- 3.8 % special rate for accommodation: overnight stays including breakfast.
- These rates have applied since 1 January 2024. An increase from 2028 to fund the 13th AHV pension is planned; it still has to be approved by a popular vote.

How to work out VAT
Adding VAT: amount without VAT × 8.1 % = VAT. Example: CHF 1,000 × 8.1 % = CHF 81, so CHF 1,081 including VAT.
Removing VAT: amount including VAT ÷ 108.1 × 8.1 = VAT. Example: CHF 1,081 ÷ 108.1 × 8.1 = CHF 81, so CHF 1,000 without VAT. A common mistake is simply taking 8.1 % off the amount including VAT, which gives CHF 87.56 instead of CHF 81.
Who has to charge VAT?
Businesses with a turnover above CHF 100,000 a year must register for VAT. For non-profit sports and cultural associations and charitable institutions, the limit is CHF 250,000. Below that, the invoice shows no VAT; Scanbill then prints “Not subject to VAT” on it.
If you are unsure which rate applies to your work, check with the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV/AFC) or your fiduciary.
From the calculator to an invoice
“Invoice with this amount” opens the generator with one line at the amount without VAT and the rate you chose. If “I’m registered for VAT” is ticked in your details, the invoice adds the VAT, shows it per rate and creates the QR payment slip. The same works for a quote.

Common questions
How do I remove 8.1 % VAT?
Divide the amount including VAT by 1.081. That gives the amount without VAT; the difference is the VAT. Example: CHF 540.50 ÷ 1.081 = CHF 500, so the VAT is CHF 40.50.
Which rate applies in restaurants?
Food and drink served in a restaurant is taxed at the standard rate of 8.1 %. Take-away food is usually taxed at the reduced rate of 2.6 %.
Does VAT have to be rounded to 5 centimes?
No. VAT is worked out to the centime. Many people round only the invoice total to 5 centimes; Scanbill offers that as an option.
Is the VAT calculator free?
Yes. It works directly in your browser, with no sign-up, and saves nothing.
